It s a common assumption among builders that tiles are waterproof. You can often lay a laminate over tile without any extra effort if the tile a smooth level and there isn t much depth in the grout lines. You ve got problems however if the tiles are uneven and have raised edges or if the grout lines are wide and deep. Even when there are no visible gaps in the grout water can migrate through the tile.

Not only is it waterproof making it ideal for kitchens and bathrooms many of the click and lock varieties can be installed directly over existing flooring with little to no prep. Laminate is a cheap fast flooring solution that easily goes right over ceramic tile. It is a thin solid flooring system that doesn t require adhesive and comes with a padded underlayment that helps smooth out any contour from the ceramic. Unfortunately this isn t true.
