Floor joist into brick wall.

Should i attach a ledger board to the brick wall and put joist hanger on the ledger board or should i put the floor joists directly into the brick wall and put cement around the joists and brick wall. The joists span wall to wall and are pocketed into the brick. If you have 3 or 4 inch diameter pipes running through the wall make the wall from 2 x 6 inch boards. When dealing with fire damage to these buildings would you ever go back with new joists bearing in the existing masonry pockets or would you come up with some other sort of connection.

Align the joist hanger so that the holes match up to the holes in the wall. Does current code we are irc here still allow this practice. In my particular application the joists would be supported on one side in the brick joist pockets and on the other side would be attached to a stick framed wall. In old brick masonry construction they often pocketed floor joists right into the masonry bearing walls interior and exterior walls.

If the joists run perpendicular to the wall an adjustment should not be necessary. Ideally they d probably get remortared but i don t have any way to protect the ends from rot. If the joists are parallel to the new wall adjust the layout so that the wall is directly under a joist. The bracket is attached by driving fasteners through the holes in flat tabs on either side of the three sided pocket or seat for the joist. At present all the floor joists are pocketed into the walls. Fit the end of the joist into the joist hanger with one narrow edge down so that the hanger fits up and around the two faces.
